    Netvibes E-mail

Netvibes.com is a custom-made web 2.0 home page solution (on steroids).

It is much like a MyYahoo or a personalized MSN or Google page, but what I especially like about Netvibes is that you can have many tabs and that there are many modules available. Truly there are so many possibilities with Netvibes that I think this is one of the best Web 2.0 solutions out there. If you are not familiar with netvibes yet, I strongly encourage you to check it out. To get you started quickly and to save you some time I already have created a netvibes tab that you can add to your netvibes to keep you informed about Hospitality-News (see the link to the left).

Netvibes is free, and without obtrusive advertisement!

It gives you the ability to create dynamic pages with Web2.0 data feeds and services all from a very simple and flexible interface. As such you can pull RSS feeds, your favorite podcasts (and play them without any additional software). Via your netvibes personalized pages you can check your email (Gmail, pop-mail etc) and use instant messenger (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ Google etc). You can also get maps, or “mashed maps” that show you traffic, weather or hotels. And because of their open web2.0 development methodology, everybody can add modules and new exciting modules are literally added daily. Note they are just getting started…

    Click the "Read more…" link below for some answers to some questions that have popped up during my workshops on Web 2.0. like;

    • How do I add the RSS feeds that I currently subscribe to?
    • How do I add all the RSS feeds that I have subscribed to in netvibes to another RSS reader?
    • Why does the language / location not work?
    • Can I read this off line?
    • Can I read this on my mobile / BlackBerry / Pocket PC?
    • How do I move a module or RSS feed to another tab?
    • Can you recommend some modules?

    netvibes.gif Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I add the RSS feeds that I currently subscribe to?

Once you are signed in to Netvibes, click the link “add content” in the top left corner of netvibes. Then click “add a feed” to add the URL (address) of the RSS feed. You can also add “featured feeds” or modules here. Want to add all the feeds that you currently subscribe to with another RSS reader with just a few clicks? That is possible; just use the OPML file standard. Go to your current RSS reader and look in settings to export your subscription list to this file format. Then all you need to do is add it via the “import an OPML file” in the same place as described above to add a single feed.

How do I add all the RSS feeds that I have subscribed to in netvibes to another RSS reader?

You can export all your RSS subscriptions from netvibes to another RSS reader by clicking “Settings” on the top right of your netvibes. Then click Backup to export your feeds to an OPML file. This file you can use to import your feeds on other RSS readers. For example your Blackberry, PocketPC, or SmartPhone or your laptop to allow for offline reading while flying..

Why does the language / location not work?

When you created your account, Netvibes recognized your IP (internet) address and set up a basic page based on the location of that IP address. This was just a sample page. Everything on that page can be changed by clicking edit in the title bar of the modules. This way you can change the weather to a location that you like, and you can also remove the welcome "webnote" from Netvibes in the (foreign) language.

The language and location settings from the settings menu on the top left will only effect the "add content" (and help) on the top left for future use, it does not change the language of the sample page that was created for you.

Can I read this off line?

No, netvibes can not be read offline. You can however export your RSS subscriptions and import them on an application (+device) that can. See question above.

Can I read this on my mobile / BlackBerry / Pocket PC?

Yes, you can export all the RSS feeds that you subscribe to with netvibes and use an RSS reader for your device to import the OPML file. However you can NOT view netvibes or its modules on a mobile browser, just the RSS feeds. For more information Check the above question; “How do I add all the RSS feeds that I have subscribed to in netvibes to another RSS reader?”

How do I move a module or RSS feed to another tab?

Drag and drop it to the new location Where are the Help files? Netvibes is very intuitive, in other words no real help files are needed. Still it will take you some time to get used to. Click, drag, and see what happens when you move your mouse across the screen. You can not brake it! Play, experiment and learn. Also note this is a very young company… some more structured help will probably be added in the future.

    Can you recommend some modules?

Here are some modules that I like / use.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Or perhaps just to let me know about a tab you shared or a module that you like...
